Forget “Risk” – Manage the Risk
The study of Risk Management (RM) as a separate professional discipline started after World War II, and was first recognized as a part of the insurance and finance industry.
During the 1970’s RM practices spread wider, and in the 1980’s RM matured further as international regulations related to RM were issued. Today enterprises and organizations seek to make risk-informed decisions when aiming to achieve strategic goals and objectives. It has become mainstream to recognize that multiple threats may prohibit fulfilling future aspirations, and hence need to be identified, assessed, responded to and continuously monitored and reported on.
This presentation does not go into the operational aspects, methods, tools or processes of RM. Rather, it investigates the main weaknesses of how RM commonly has been practiced, and suggests solutions for how to remedy these weaknesses.
Time has come for us Risk Managers to adopt a different approach and to increase the value we add to organizations.
